1.1 PCB concept -- the mother of electronic products

1.2 PCB industry cycle -- four liters and four drops

PCB, as an important part of the electronic industry, has gone through four cycles. Each cycle is driven by innovation factors to climb, slow down and even decline, and then new factors emerge to push the industry into the next cycle.

Stage 1: from 1980 to 1990, PCB industry started rapidly. The popularity of household appliances in the world drove the vigorous development of PCB industry for the first time. By 1991-92, as growth in traditional home appliances peaked and the Japanese economy slumped, global PCB output fell 10 per cent.

Stage 2: from 1993 to 2000, PCB industry continued to grow, mainly driven by the popularity of desktop computers and the Internet wave. New technologies such as HDI and FPC promoted the continuous growth of global PCB market scale, and the overall compound growth rate of PCB industry reached 10.57%. In 2001-2002, the bursting of the Internet bubble led to the global economic contraction, which slowed down the demand for downstream electronic terminals and hit the demand of the PCB industry. Its output fell by about 25% for two consecutive years.

Stage 3: PCB industry continued to grow from 2003 to 2008 (CAGR=7.73%). This is mainly due to the global economic recovery and the increased demand for downstream mobile phones, laptops and other emerging electronic products, which has stimulated the role of communications and consumer electronics in the PCB industry. However, the outbreak of financial crisis in the second half of 2008 disrupted the good growth trend of PCB industry. In 2009, the total output value of PCB industry dropped by about 15% after a cold winter.

Stage 4: from 2010 to 2014, PCB industry showed a trend of slight fluctuation and growth (CAGR=2.29%), mainly benefiting from the gradual recovery of global economy and the drive of various downstream smart terminal products. With the slowdown in the demand for electronic products, the total output value of the industry declined slightly from 2015 to 2016, with a cumulative value of -5.62%.

At present, the overall development of PCB industry is slowing down. Starting from 2017, with the emergence of new structural growth hotspots such as 5G, cloud computing and smart cars, PCB industry is expected to usher in a new growth driver and enter the fifth stage of industry cycle development.
